A quiet community in Ohio has been left devastated after what began as an emergency police call turned into a deadly confrontation.

According to available information, officers responded to a report of a burglary and gunfire at a home in Rittman, a city located about 60 kilometers south of Cleveland. But moments after arriving at the scene, police were reportedly met with gunfire.

What started as a routine emergency response quickly became a tragedy that shook the entire community.

During the exchange of fire, Sergeant Scott Ries, a 54-year-old veteran police officer, was killed while responding with his colleagues.

Ries had served with the Rittman Police Department for ten years. Before that, he also worked as a deputy sheriff in Wayne County and as a police officer in Sugar Grove.

Officers Injured, Police Dog Left in Critical Condition

The violence did not end there. Four officers were injured during the incident, including three members of the Medina County Sheriff’s Office and one officer from the Hinckley Police Department.

Two of the injured officers were taken to hospital and were reported to be in stable condition, while others received medical assistance at the scene.

A police service dog was also wounded during the intervention, with its condition described as serious.

Child Among the Victims

Authorities confirmed that the suspect was also killed. Two other people lost their lives as well.

According to information attributed to the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, among the dead were the suspect’s former partner and her child.

The details surrounding how the other victims died have not yet been fully released, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Ohio Pays Tribute to Fallen Officer

Following the tragedy, officials in Ohio ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff in honor of Sergeant Scott Ries. The community is now mourning an officer who lost his life while doing his duty.

The deadly shooting has once again raised questions about the dangers officers face when responding to armed suspects and unpredictable emergency calls.

For the people of Rittman, however, this is more than another police report. It is a heartbreaking loss that has left families, officers and residents searching for answers.

One call. Multiple victims. And a community that will never forget what happened that day.
